Elon Musk purchases rights to wcw from wweAUSTIN (Tex.) - World Championship Wrestling is back! Formerly one of the top promotions in the world, WCW has been closed since being purchased by Vince McMahon (WWE) back in May 2001 and has now been purchased by billionaire Elon Musk. The news may come as a shock as it wasn't even known that WWE Inc. was looking to sell the defunct promotion, although it sounds like they might not have been the ones looking. Another shocker was the fact that the buyer was Musk himself.
"I called him up (Vince McMahon) and I told him I wanted it. I wanted it all. At first he wasn't interested as predicted, but after throwing some numbers around I was pleased that we were finally able to come to an agreement" Musk said in a telephone call. No one would have guessed this day would come, let alone Elon Musk having interest in itself? "As busy as I am I must admit I have been contemplating this for many many months now. I just couldn't tolerate the itch anymore and knew that the best time to make a move was now. I have been a closet wrestling fan all of my life. Once WWE purchased WCW back in 2001 I felt like it kind of dampened the whole industry. I am a fan first and I think I can speak for a lot of fans that there's a lot of mismanaged talent and stories done by the big promotions and if there's a chance to do it the right way, for the fans, I will do my best to deliver that." Musk elaborated on some of his plans in the upcoming months, "It's going to be very busy, very time consuming. We purchased the name, the brand, the prestige. That's it. Nothing else. We'll need to go out and get staff, talent, equipment, production, everything you name it. At this point, anyone who isn't tied down to a contract with another company will be on our radar. We want to deliver a product that the fans want, enjoy, and deserve." WCW was red hot back when talent came over from WWE (WWF at the time) and shifted to the debut of the New World Order taking on WCW as a whole. At one point the company was leading the ratings war and had the industry by the neck, king of the mountain. Musk acknowledges that there's history there and a lot of former WCW employees are available to return, "Per many of us wrestling fans, I loved the old WCW. There were a lot of huge stars at the time with Hogan, Nash, Hall, Flair, Sting and I could keep going on. Look, WCW hasn't been around since 2001. It's now 2021, we have to take in the reality that every single person involved in WCW back then has aged 20 years, that's basic simple math. If we think they can bring significant value and help our rise and rebirth, then it's safe to say they'll strongly be considered." When we have more information on this breaking news we will deliver it. It'll be interesting to see how this purchase and re-opening will affect the wrestling world and other promotions themselves. WWE is still #1 in the pack, however the majority of their talent is secured through exclusive right written contracts so don't look for much of their talent to make a jump to WCW. It could mean big changes for AEW, New Japan, IMPACT, ROH, and some of the other top independent promotions. One thing is clear, with Elon Musk as it's owner, the sky's the limit for WCW.
